Using other's journey as a source of INSPIRATION

By Ali Basye-Featherston
As you go through the Instagram discover  page, you are bound to come across a progress or a before/after photo: a side by side image of someone who has lost a lot of weight, gained muscle mass, improved their flexibility, or increased their strength. There is something about these progress photos that pull people in.For many accounts, they tend to be the highest performing posts on their pages. As you scroll through the hundreds of comments under the photo, you read the conversation going in one of two directions: people feel incredibly inspired and uplifted, or they feel overwhelmed and incompetent.
So when you come across these photos, how do you stay in the positivity and light?
How do you look at this person, that accomplished something that you want to do, without feeling envious?

Begin to put things into perspective

In front of you are two photos of a person. Although some span of time has passed between taking the two images, they are still the same person. You can start to recognize that they were once in the same place as you. Then you try and better understand what they are doing right.

Identify what brought their success

If this person has managed to make progress, then they must be doing something right. This is the time for you to do your own research, maybe reach out to them and see what brought them success. You could scroll back through their feed and look at their other posts to gain a better insight into this person's life and what might be going on behind the screen. Just be sure to take all of the gathered information with a grain of salt, everybody and every body is different.

Plan your own success

While it is important to see what one person did that brought them success, that does not necessarily mean that method will work for you. You need to search for other people who have also improved. From here you can cross-analyze your findings to see what is working best for them. Try implementing these different methods into your life to find what is most effective for you and your lifestyle.

Finally, Take a selfie

The best way to be inspired by progress photos is to make your own. Identify an area of your life that you would like to see physical improvements on and take your “before” pic. You should keep in mind that the best progress photos are ones that have consistency in things like lighting, angles, and clothing. Then every few weeks or months take another photo to check in on your progress. Remember to be patient and appreciate your journey, minor changes every day will eventually lead to major results!

As I’ve gotten more into yoga, and as I’ve started investing more time into my Instagram, it’s teaching me that everybody has something they can offer to somebody else, so you should be confident in who you are and what you have going for you
