Traveling Yogi Must-Haves

By Brooke Davidson

One of the greatest advantages of practicing yoga as a hobby is that it can be done with minimal equipment and nearly everywhere you go. While this means that modern yogis don’t need many additional supplies while traveling, there are certainly some items that make the venture more enjoyable.

1. Gaiam Folding Yoga Mat

Picture
Although this mat can also be rolled up, the pressed-in creases allow for easy foldability, helping it to fit perfectly into the bottom of a suitcase or backpack. I’ve even fit it in my saddlebags on a backcountry horse packing trip! (See image on item 4) The nearly-smooth surface means it's easy to clean (and brush sand off of!). The adorable patterns are a fun bonus.

2. Mantis Yoga Retreat Duffel

Built by a yogi for yogis, this duffle has everything you might need for your next yoga retreat/training/adventure. Key features: options to carry with handles, a crossbody strap, OR as a backpack; waterproof, durable material; carry-on approved sizing; lower compartment built with blocks and mats in mind; separate pockets for phones & accessories.

Ultimately, it is incomparable in its design when it comes to traveling with yoga props.

3. Activated Charcoal Pills

Okay, this one may seem a bit strange, but hear me out. There is nothing worse than feeling crummy while traveling, ESPECIALLY if you are hoping to be active and get some quality time in on the mat. Activated charcoal is essential for travel and keeps your belly feeling happy and up for whatever adventures await. If you feel like you may have eaten something bad, take 1-2 of these and feel them work their magic as they absorb unwanted toxins and move them safely through digestion. You’ll be on your mat again in no time.

I usually just throw some in a baggy in my hygiene bag, so weight & dimensions are really up to the traveler!

4. Hydro Flask Insulated Water Bottle

Picture
I can barely make it past airport security before needing to refill my water bottle, so it is a crucial component of my own travel accouterments, but it becomes even more necessary if the trip revolves around yoga. Although in some countries it may not be prudent to drink from the tap, it is always so nice to have a reusable bottle -- and one that is double-walled and able to keep the inside contents at the desired temperature is clutch.

I love this skinnier model for travel as it is easier to fit into the tetris puzzle that my suitcase sometimes becomes. Additionally, it’s spill-proof lid allows for worry-free jostling in airplanes and on dirt roads.

Weight: 12.8oz
Dimensions: 24oz
Prices: $34.95

While yoga really can be done anytime, anywhere, having products like these makes bringing your practice with you all the easier.
