Step 1: Recognize that you have the capability to change and grow.
Think of the person you were as a kid, think of some of the not-so-wise things that you did. If someone were to ask you if you were that person today, you’d probably say something along the lines of “NO, I’ve grown up.” Now we both know you’re capable of change because you’ve done it before. |
Step 2: Think about something that would make you a better person. Some characteristic, trait, or action you would like to have in your life.
It doesn’t have to be a massive change either, it can be something as simple as “I want to show more compassion to a stranger”, “I want to work on my communication skills”, “I want to do my laundry before I run out of underwear and am forced to”, or maybe you just want to get more active. Step 3: Write down your goal To better illustrate what I mean I’ll give you my goal: Keep a neater living space Step 4: Identify what action you can take this year to work towards that goal. Remember, don’t get too fancy, keep it simple. Action to take in the next year: donate one trash bag full of unwanted items. |
Step 5: Think about the rest of the month. What action can you take in the next month to work towards your goal?
Action to take in the next month: Go through the clothes in three of my dresser drawers to see what items I no longer like or wear. Step 6: Bring that goal even closer, what can you do this week to work towards it? Action to take this week: do my laundry & vacuum the living room Step 7: This is the most important task for you to complete because by writing it out you are committing to completing it before you go to bed tonight. What action can you take today? Fold clean laundry that I haven’t put away yet. |
Here’s the tricky part: keeping all of that in mind every single day. This exercise highlights a big picture goal with manageable steps, it turns a daunting task into a feasible plan. A great way to stay on task is to find a buddy. You can post these images in your stories on Instagram and tag your friends to participate with you. This way you can both work on your goals and hold each other accountable.
Take one small action every day to work towards your goal, practice & persistence makes perfect. |
