My 5 Favorite Heart Openers

By Brooke Bonfadini

How many of us truly live in the present moment? I know I am certainly guilty of living in the past and future far more than the present. The society we live in is one of constant distractions, planning, and futuristic thinking. Often, we become so focused on the future and where we want to be, we forget to enjoy where we are. So, in this article, I will lay out 5 things that helped me learn to be more present.

1. NOTICING YOUR SURROUNDINGS

One tried and true technique for bringing yourself back to the present moment is to take a moment and really notice the space you are in. Pause, and list 3 things you see, 3 things you hear, and 3 things you feel.

2. SPEND TIME IN NATURE

Taking the time to get outside, whether it’s for a long hike or sitting on your front porch, is a great way to reduce the distractions that take away from the value of the present. Nature allows us to create an environment free of societal expectations that push us towards the future and out of the present.

3. TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE

Whether it’s when you’re on the bus or out with a friend, turning off your cell phone for a little bit allows you to be engaged in the activity you are doing instead of living in another world. By putting your phone aside, the time spent with others or even yourself will feel more fulfilling since you are engaged and fully present for the activity.

4. TAKE A FEW DEEP BREATHS

Whenever you begin to feel yourself moving away from the present and into the future, pause and begin taking a few deep breaths. One method of deep breathing I love to practice in particular is the 3s method. In this method, inhale for 3 seconds, hold your breath in for 3 seconds, exhale for 3 seconds, and then hold empty breath for 3 seconds. Repeat this a few times, really focusing on filling up and letting go.

5. PLAY QUESTIONS

Sometimes when we start to leave the present for another time, it is because we are wrapped up in our heads or distracted by other things. When we step back and ask ourselves questions such as “How am I feeling right now?”, “What is one positive thing about this moment?”, or “Where am I holding tension?” it reengages us in our current activities.
If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed by the future, remember you aren’t there yet. You live in the present moment, and each moment has the potential to be the best one of your life. So, be sure to fully enjoy each moment as it comes, and if you’re struggling to love the present, remember you are not alone and these tips are here to help you.
